AI Citation Audit
& Engineering

Most brands are invisible to AI answer engines and have no idea. We run sterile environment tests across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews to find out exactly where you stand — then engineer the conditions that make citations compound.

Built on RLHF constraint methodology. Documented with case study evidence. Not a dashboard report.

Your rankings look fine. Your AI citations don’t exist.

You have published content, optimised pages, and a site that passes every standard SEO check. But when your ideal customer asks ChatGPT which tool solves their specific problem, your brand is not in the answer.

This is not a content quality problem. It is not a backlink problem. It is a retrieval problem.

AI answer engines do not rank pages the way Google does. They calculate the cost of parsing your site’s structure, resolving your entity relationships, and verifying your claims against corroborating sources. If that cost is too high — if your HTML is structurally expensive to read, your vocabulary hasn’t been seeded across independent sources, or your landing pages are dead ends with no internal depth — the model skips you and cites a competitor with GEO-optimized website infrastructure is cheaper to trust.

The most dangerous version of this problem is that you will never see it in your analytics. AI citation failures generate no referral data. No bounce rate. No GSC impression. You are simply absent from conversations your buyers are having right now — and you have no way of knowing it unless you test for it directly.

This service tests for it directly.

Why this methodology is different

Most AI visibility services run a brand name into a chat window and report back what comes up. That is not a citation audit. That is a vanity search.

The ContentOps AI Citation Audit is built on RLHF constraint methodology — the same principles used in Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback to test how language models route retrieval decisions under specific constraint conditions.

When a user asks an AI assistant a question, the model is not doing a keyword match. It is making a routing decision: answer from internal memory, trigger a live web search, or recommend an external tool. Most prompts are too generic to force that routing decision into a specific channel. The model answers from its training data and your brand never enters the picture.

Our approach engineers the prompt sequence to progressively narrow the model’s retrieval options using overlapping technical constraints — until the only tools that survive the filter are the ones built precisely for that problem. If your infrastructure is correctly positioned, your brand appears. If it is not, we can tell you exactly why and what needs to change.

We documented this methodology in a live case study: a ContentOps citation inside Google Gemini from a domain with DA 1 and a single registered backlink, achieved in 24 days using zero paid promotion.

What this service covers — and what it does not

This service diagnoses and engineers AI citation conditions. It is a verification and engineering service, not an SEO remediation service.

The sterile environment testing, constraint prompt sequences, vocabulary seeding strategy, schema implementation, and off-site corroboration work are all within scope. Where the audit identifies that structural HTML problems, broken site architecture, or missing content layers are preventing citation — that diagnosis is part of what you receive. The remediation is a separate engagement.

Think of it this way: this service reads the MRI and tells you exactly what it shows. If the MRI reveals something that needs surgery, that is a separate conversation — and we can have it.

Structural remediation, when needed, is scoped and priced separately through the Backlog Rescue & Audit or Topical Authority Map Build services.

Choose your citation track

Before we can test for your citations, we need to know what kind of citation you are trying to win. These require different constraint architectures and different success metrics.

Track A — Longtail Query Citations

Your buyer types a specific frustration or problem into ChatGPT. You want your brand to appear in the answer.

Best for: Discovery-stage queries. “What tool helps me do X.” “Why is my Y not working.” “How do I fix Z without hiring a developer.”

The constraint engineering is built around your ICP’s problem state, not your brand name. The model is funnelled toward your specific functional boundary through a progressive narrowing sequence.

Track B — Product / Service / Brand Citations

Your buyer asks for a recommendation in your category. You want your named product or service to be cited alongside — or instead of — established competitors.

Best for: Recommendation queries. “Best tool for X.” “Which platform handles Y.” “Compare A vs B vs C.”

The structural work focuses on entity confidence — making the model trust your brand enough to name it. Schema declaration, vocabulary seeding, and competitor gap exploitation are the primary levers.

Service tiers

All tiers use the same sterile environment testing protocol. The scope, depth, and competitive intelligence layer expand across tiers.

Tier 1 — One-Time

The Citation Baseline Audit

$1,500 — $2,500
one-time

You find out exactly where you stand. For brands that have never run a structured AI citation test — or have done informal searches and want rigorous, documented results.

Pricing by scope:

  • $1,500 — two AI platforms, up to 5 target queries
  • $2,000 — four AI platforms, up to 5 target queries
  • $2,500 — four AI platforms, up to 8 target queries
  • +$200 per additional query set beyond the base
  • +$300–$500 for geo-isolated testing (city-level residential proxy routing)

Deliverables:

  • Sterile environment intercept passes across selected platforms — fresh unauthenticated sessions, no prior brand history
  • Documented citation inventory: which queries trigger citations, which platforms cite you, what vocabulary the model uses verbatim when it does
  • Structural diagnosis: the specific reasons you are being skipped on queries where you do not appear — compute tax assessment, entity confidence gaps, schema voids, vocabulary absence
  • Annotated session transcripts — the actual model outputs, not a summary dashboard
  • Priority fix list ranked by citation impact with recommended next steps

What you provide:

  • Your website URL and access to GSC and Bing Webmaster Tools data
  • Your ICP description: who your buyer is, what frustration they have before they find you, the exact words they use to describe that frustration
  • 3–5 target queries written as your ICP would type them into a chat — not keyword strings, actual conversational prompts
  • Target geographic markets if geo-isolation is needed

Tier 2 — One-Time

The Competitor Conquest Audit

$3,000 — $5,000
one-time

You find out where you stand and where your competitors are weak. For brands that are being outranked in AI answers and want to know the exact structural gaps they can exploit to displace a competitor’s citation position.

Pricing by scope:

  • $3,000 — Tier 1 baseline plus two competitor audits, four platforms
  • $4,000 — Tier 1 baseline plus three competitor audits, four platforms
  • $5,000 — Tier 1 baseline plus four competitor audits, four platforms, geo-isolated

Everything in Tier 1, plus:

  • Parallel sterile environment audits run against two to four named competitors using identical constraint sequences
  • Citation gap map: the exact queries where competitors are being cited and you are not, and the structural reasons why
  • Vocabulary mirror analysis: the specific language each competitor’s model output uses — revealing the semantic territory they have claimed and the gaps they have left
  • Shadow Concept identification: supporting entities competitor content references but has never built dedicated pages for — the gaps you can fill to displace their position
  • Constraint engineering brief: the exact prompt architecture your ICP would use to reach your product category, optimised for your specific constraint set

Additional client requirements:

  • Names and URLs of two to four direct competitors
  • The specific use case or product category you want to win citations for

Tier 3 — Monthly Retainer

The Citation Engineering Retainer

$3,000 — $6,000
per month

Citations compound. This retainer is built for brands that want consistent, growing AI visibility across all major platforms — and a monthly verification system that proves it is working.

Pricing by scope:

  • $3,000/mo — Two platforms, 4 sterile intercept passes, advisory implementation only
  • $4,500/mo — Four platforms, 6 sterile intercept passes, schema implementation included
  • $6,000/mo — Four platforms, 8 sterile intercept passes, full structural and off-site implementation, geo-isolated testing, one Shadow Concept node published per month

Month 1 — The Baseline:

  • Full Tier 1 Citation Baseline Audit to establish the starting state
  • Structural diagnosis and priority fix list
  • Schema implementation across core pages (Organization, Service or Product, Article)
  • Vocabulary seeding strategy and off-site content calendar

Months 2+ — Ongoing execution:

  • Four to eight sterile environment intercept passes per month distributed across target platforms and query sets
  • Monthly citation inventory comparing results against prior month baseline — movement tracked per query per platform
  • Structural fix log: HTML-level interventions on priority pages, resubmitted to GSC and Bing after each fix
  • Off-site vocabulary seeding: Reddit, LinkedIn, and YouTube activity report with engagement metrics and vocabulary terms deployed
  • Shadow Concept publishing: one to two new content nodes per month targeting citation gaps identified in the audit
  • Monthly report delivered as annotated PDF — not a dashboard, not a summary; the actual session transcripts, the actual citation counts, the actual structural changes made
  • 30-minute monthly review call

Important scope note:

Where the ongoing audit identifies that structural HTML problems, broken architecture, or significant content gaps are preventing citation improvement, that remediation work is scoped and priced separately. The retainer diagnoses and engineers citation conditions. Deep backlog rescue or map rebuild work is a separate engagement — which we can run in parallel if needed.

Additional client requirements:

  • Access to implement or approve HTML changes within 48 hours of delivery, or a technical contact who can
  • Brand voice guide or writing samples for off-site seeding to match your voice
  • Monthly 30-minute alignment call

How the sterile environment testing works

AI citations cannot be tracked with standard analytics. Discovery happens inside closed conversational sessions that generate no referral data. You have to test for them directly — and you have to test in conditions that eliminate personalisation contamination.

Every intercept pass we run follows the same four-step protocol:

Step 1 — Publish and force crawl. Any new page or structural change is submitted immediately to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. We do not wait for organic discovery — we force it.

Step 2 — 72-hour latency buffer. We wait a minimum of three to five days after submission before running any test. Testing before the indexing window closes produces false negatives that make working infrastructure look broken.

Step 3 — Sterile environment initialisation. A fresh, unauthenticated browser session on the target platform. All cache cleared. Cross-chat memory disabled. Gemini Apps Activity paused. ChatGPT memory toggled off. Perplexity AI Profile cleared. No prior brand history in the session. For geo-isolated tests, a residential proxy routed through the target city before initialisation.

Step 4 — Constraint-based intercept. We do not ask “what do you know about [brand]?” We run your ICP’s exact operational frustration as a 25-word conversational prompt and let the model route to a recommendation naturally. Then we run the progressive constraint sequence. That is the real test of whether your infrastructure has been indexed and your vocabulary has been learned.

Every session is documented with annotated transcripts — not screenshots of the output, the full session with the constraint sequence visible so you can see exactly how the retrieval decision was reached.

Live Evidence

DA 1. Zero backlinks. Gemini citation in 24 days.

ContentOps earned a direct citation inside Google Gemini from a brand new domain with a single registered backlink. No paid promotion. No directory listings. No guest posts.

The methodology: a disciplined 24-day vocabulary seeding campaign across Reddit and LinkedIn, a structurally clean landing page built for AI ingestion rather than human conversion, and a three-turn constraint prompt sequence engineered to funnel the model’s retrieval decision toward the only tool that fit all three constraints simultaneously.

When Turn 3 was run, Gemini cited ContentOps alongside Screaming Frog — mirroring proprietary brand vocabulary verbatim: “hidden pathogens,” “header structure,” “unindexed image layers.” The model had learned the vocabulary from the off-site seeding before the test was ever run.

Common questions

How is this different from checking if my brand shows up in ChatGPT?

Typing your brand name into a chat window tells you if the model already knows about you from training data. It does not tell you whether you appear when your ICP describes their problem without knowing your brand exists. That is the gap we test. Most brands that fail our audit are not unknown to the model — they are structurally positioned so the model never routes to them when a real buyer asks a real question.

What if the audit finds I’m not being cited at all?

That is the most common result for brands that have not specifically engineered their AI citation conditions. The audit tells you exactly why — whether it is a vocabulary absence, a structural compute tax problem, a schema gap, or a missing off-site corroboration layer. You leave with a clear priority fix list and the option to engage the relevant ContentOps service to address it. The audit itself is a complete and standalone deliverable regardless of what it finds.

What if the audit finds structural problems on my site?

The audit diagnoses structural problems but does not remediate them. Where broken HTML architecture, page builder code bloat, or missing content layers are identified as the root cause of citation failure, that work is scoped and priced separately through the Backlog Rescue or Topical Map Build services. The audit tells you what the MRI shows. If it shows something that needs surgery, we scope that separately.

Do you track citations across all AI platforms?

Base tier covers two platforms — ChatGPT and Gemini. Full coverage adds Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Each platform has a different retrieval architecture, memory contamination risk, and geo-isolation requirement, so testing across all four is more involved than running the same test four times. We document the setup and output for each platform separately so you can see where you appear, where you do not, and whether the gap is consistent or platform-specific.

What does geo-isolated testing mean and do I need it?

AI platforms use localisation signals — your IP address, browser language, and location settings — to adjust search results and recommendations. If your buyers are concentrated in specific cities or your product has local relevance, a test run from the wrong location gives you contaminated results. Geo-isolated testing routes the session through a residential proxy in the target city before initialisation, ensuring the model treats the prompt exactly like a local buyer in that market. Most B2B SaaS brands do not need it. Local service businesses, regional brands, and any client where location affects recommendations should include it.

How long does the retainer take to show results?

The first sterile environment test after Month 1 structural work typically shows movement on one to three queries within four to six weeks of the initial fixes going live. The compound effect — where vocabulary seeding, structural fixes, and new content nodes all reinforce each other — usually becomes visible by Month 3. Citation growth is not linear. It tends to plateau and then jump when a new vocabulary cluster reaches sufficient corroboration density across platforms.
